Signs of Jesus’ Second Coming: What Does the Bible Say?

For generations, believers around the world have asked the same question: Are we living in the last days? The Bible speaks clearly about the return of Jesus Christ and gives several signs that will increase before His second coming. While Scripture teaches that no one knows the exact day or hour, Jesus encouraged His followers to stay watchful, faithful, and spiritually prepared.

In Matthew 24, the disciples asked Jesus directly:

“What will be the sign of Your coming and of the end of the age?” Matthew 24:3

Jesus responded by describing events and conditions that would mark the last days. Here are some of the major biblical signs of Christ’s return.

1. Wars and Rumors of Wars

One of the clearest signs Jesus mentioned was increasing global conflict.

“You will hear of wars and rumors of wars…” Matthew 24:6

Throughout history there have always been wars, but Jesus described a growing atmosphere of unrest among nations. Political instability, violence, and fear continue to shape the modern world, reminding believers that God’s Word remains true.

2. Earthquakes, Famines, and Natural Disasters

Jesus also warned that natural disasters would increase before His return.

“There will be famines and earthquakes in various places.” Matthew 24:7

The Bible describes these events as “birth pains,” meaning signs that intensify as the coming of Christ approaches. Many Christians today see the increase of disasters, pandemics, and environmental crises as reminders that this world is temporary and in need of redemption.

3. False Prophets and Spiritual Deception

Another major sign is spiritual confusion and deception.

“Many will come in My name… and will deceive many.” Matthew 24:5

The rise of false teachings, counterfeit spirituality, and distorted versions of the gospel has become increasingly common. Jesus warned believers to remain grounded in Scripture and to test every teaching against the truth of God’s Word.

4. Moral Decline and Lawlessness

The Bible describes the last days as a time of moral decay and spiritual coldness.

“Because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.” Matthew 24:12

The apostle Paul also warned that people would become lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, unholy, and without self-control. The breakdown of morality and the rejection of biblical truth are signs repeatedly mentioned throughout Scripture.

5. Persecution of Christians

Jesus told His followers that believers would face opposition because of their faith.

“You will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake.” Matthew 24:9

6. The Gospel Will Be Preached to All Nations

Despite darkness increasing in the world, the gospel continues spreading across the globe.

“And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all nations, and then the end will come.” Matthew 24:14

Through missionaries, churches, livestreams, social media, and Bible translations, the message of Jesus Christ is reaching more people than ever before. Many believers see this global spread of the gospel as one of the greatest signs that Christ’s return is drawing near.

7. People Will Mock the Promise of Christ’s Return

The Bible also says that many people will dismiss the idea of Jesus returning.

“Where is the promise of His coming?” 2 Peter 3:4

In a world increasingly focused on materialism and skepticism, biblical prophecy is often mocked or ignored. Yet Scripture warned this would happen long before our generation.

No One Knows the Exact Day

Although the Bible gives many signs, Jesus made one thing very clear:

“But of that day and hour no one knows…” Matthew 24:36
